Presentation:
Join us for this month’s Lunch & Learn presentation. by Ben Moan of NDEP on the Potential for Vapor Intrusion into Indoor Air at Sites with Chlorinated Solvent Contamination. Releases of volatile pollutants, such as tetrachloroethene (PCE, often used in dry-cleaning or as a parts degreaser) present a unique risk due to the potential for vapors to enter buildings and impact indoor air. This talk will focus on the basic transport mechanisms, tools for evaluating vapor intrusion (VI) potential, the regulatory framework in Nevada, VI risk assessment, and mitigation. We will also briefly discuss a Las Vegas case where houses more than half a mile from a former dry-cleaner were impacted by VI. Mitigation systems were installed at individual houses, and remediation is ongoing.
Speaker Bio:
Mr. Moan has been with the NDEP Bureau of Corrective Actions for the past 8 years, first as a case officer and supervisor in the Las Vegas office before transferring to the Carson City office as a remediation specialist. Prior to working for NDEP, he worked at Timet in Henderson, NV for 2 ½ years in environmental compliance. While obtaining his master’s degree in environmental engineering, he worked at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff as an environmental analytical chemist.
